Historical context
A ceremonial carriage used by Queen Maria I of Portugal, bearing the Portuguese Royal Arms. Dating from the late eighteenth century, it is traditionally known as Queen Maria I’s Berlin and formed part of the Portuguese Royal Household.
Description
The small, enclosed coach body is ornamented with foliate motifs and strings of pearls framing the Royal Arms. Glazing is confined to the doors. Set below the level of the shafts, the body has a low centre of gravity, giving the carriage greater stability. The interior is upholstered in green velvet. The forecarriage incorporates the coachman’s seat and footboard, while the body is suspended on leather braces assisted by springs.
