Coach of Queen Mariana Vitória

Historical context

Ceremonial vehicle which belonged to Queen Mariana Vitória of Bourbon, daughter of Filipe V of Spain who came to Portugal in 1729 on the occasion of her marriage to the future King, José I.

Description

A closed body with glass windows upholstered in black leather and tack work decoration. The Portuguese Royal Coat of Arms is painted on both panels. The sides of the coach are adorned with allegorical figures and enriched with painted and gilded decoration. The interior is upholstered in red velvet, with silk curtains, while the ceiling is embellished with fringed valances embroidered in gold. The floor, or parsevão, is covered in red morocco leather and finished with decorative studs.
