Historical context
Princess Catherine of Braganza (1638–1705), daughter of King João IV and sister of Kings Afonso VI and Pedro II, married King Charles II of England. Her dowry included a substantial sum of money, the city and fortress of Tangier, and the port and island of Bombay. She is traditionally associated with the introduction of tea drinking at the English court.
