Table Coach

Historical context

Travel vehicle used in 1729 at the ceremony of the Exchange of the Princesses on the border of Portugal and Spain, upon the River Caia. On this occasion, Portugal handed Princess Maria Bárbara, daughter of King João V, to the heir of the Spanish Crown, Fernando VI, to be married, and received the Spanish Princess Mariana Vitória, daughter of Filipe V, to marry the future king of Portugal, Prince José I.

Description

The enclosed, octagonal coach body is glazed only at the doors. The interior is upholstered in crimson velvet, with the ceiling enriched with gold braid and fringe. A removable table fitted inside the coach gives the vehicle its name. Crimson silk curtains complete the interior, while the floor, or parsevão, is covered in red morocco leather and finished with two rows of gilt studs. The coach body is suspended on robust leather braces and four springs.
