Historical context
Painted in 1855 by Manuel Maria Bordalo Pinheiro (1815–1880), this portrait is a copy of a work by Franz Xaver Winterhalter dating from 1854. Originally displayed in the Chamber of Peers, it was removed following the establishment of the Portuguese Republic in 1910.
Description
King Pedro V is depicted standing in three-quarter view, dressed in the uniform of the Generalissimo. Holding a military bicorne and white gloves in his left hand, he gestures towards the Constitutional Charter, displayed on a table alongside the royal crown and sceptre. A draped curtain partially reveals a landscape beyond.
