Historical context

Dating from 1807–1810 and attributed to Nicolas-Louis-Albert Delerive, the painting is closely related to an engraving by Francesco Bartolozzi after a drawing by Henri L'Evêque. The order in which the two works were produced remains a subject of scholarly debate.
